Rawaan: Safe Spaces Through Movement
She’s Azraq’s Chief Dance Officer. And only 12 years old. Meet Rawaan.
If you hear loud music close to the clubhouse, there's a high chance you'll find Rawaan with a large group of girls, all moving and dancing to the latest tunes. Gathering every week to dance zumba at the KLABU, it is their way to express themselves fully, feel proud and have fun.
Originally from Syria, Rawaan arrived in the Azraq refugee camp when she was just four years old.
Inspired by girls dancing zumba at an event, she started teaching herself choreographies through YouTube. Since starting zumba, Rawaan has performed in front of crowds and teaches young girls in the KLABU. Seeing KLABU as a safe space for young girls, she encourages them to find energy, strength and liveliness through zumba.

"Zumba isn't just a dance. It's full of energy, movement and strength."

Now zumba is one of the most popular activities at the clubhouse. Every week more girls are joining, shedding their shyness and learning new moves.
Raawan’s story is an attest to independence, initiative, and how young community members are taking ownership of the clubhouse and shaping it in their own way. We hope that many more follow in Rawaan's footsteps: sharing their talents with the wider community and inspiring the next generation to find their voice and take centre stage.
"I encourage all girls my age to come to KLABU because it has a safe space with fun and useful sports activities. "
