Señor Hermes had fled his homeland of Venezuela to find refuge in Boa Vista, just 220 km across the border in Brazil. He is part of the Warao indigenous group in the shelter, a tribe that has a lifelong relationship with water and are skilled canoeists. Which is why Señor Hermes describes canoeing as his ‘first love’, despite being a former goalkeeper playing on a regional level in Venezuela. He also made his passion for sports a profession throughout his life, working as an athletics coach for many years. Now, in the heart of the Tuaranoko shelter, he found himself embracing a new sporting role — that of a commentator, stepping into the arena as a beacon of resilience amidst a refugee reality full of challenges.

Boa Vista Spirit
When Señor Hermes holds the microphone, and enthusiastically commentates the action on the pitch close to the Boa Vista clubhouse, he transports his audience to a world world where daily life struggles disappear and only the spirit of competition remains. Through his words, Señor Hermes became more than just a sports commentator; he is a prominent constant in the shelter and many call him "the voice of Tuaranoko".

"Goooooal!"

Senor Hermes commentating during a football match in Boa Vista
He is the animator of the Boa Vista community, firing up the spectators during the matches, weaving tales of on-pitch passion and skill. Señor Hermes is as warm-hearted as a person can be – even though he rarely smiles. But his belief in the power of sports shines through alongside his commitment to do good for the community in Tuaranoko. These have truly made him an ambassador for the Boa Vista Spirit, and one of the club’s celebrated first members. Long may his voice ring out across the pitch!

"Sport came into my life when nothing else was available. It gave me the chance to move on."
