We believe in full transparency. Regarding our mission, our goals and how KLABU works.
KLABU membership is a way of standing alongside refugees and supporting them as they rebuild their lives through sport. By contributing as little as €1 per month – and more if you can – you are helping to provide access to sport, equipment and community programmes in KLABU clubhouses around the world. As a member, you are not just supporting our work, you are becoming part of our club.
Since we launched KLABU in 2019, most of our funding has come from partnerships with companies, foundations and institutions, along with income from selling KLABU sportswear. Over time, we saw that many people wanted to support the impact we were making without necessarily buying a product or becoming a partner.
The membership was created as a simple and accessible way for individuals to join KLABU and support access to sport, joy and hope in refugee settings.
Every euro month by month helps provide access to sport for one person. This includes organised sports sessions and training, equipment, safe facilities and the support that is needed to keep our clubhouses running. Together, our members help ensure that thousands of people can participate in sport every week. You can read more about KLABU’s impact here.
Once a KLABU clubhouse is established, our focus is on deepening and expanding impact in that location. Refugee settlements are often large. For example, Kalobeyei in Kenya hosts around 80,000 refugees, while our clubhouse currently reaches about 10,000 people.
To reach an additional 5,000 people, we budget around €60,000 per year. This covers infrastructure, transport, local staff, training, safeguarding, sports equipment, community programmes and long term capacity building. This comes down to a real cost of €1 per person per month.
So through the KLABU membership we’re raising funds to expand our impact at the locations where we work. Funding to set up new clubhouses, as well as for the KLABU team and organisation, is raised through corporate partnerships, institutional support and sales of KLABU sportswear.
Yes, for sure! You can choose to multiply your impact by contributing a higher amount during sign up. Every euro you contribute gives access to sport, joy and hope for one person.
At the moment, around 50,000 people actively participate in sports and community activities through KLABU clubhouses. Our ambition is to grow that impact tenfold.
Reaching 500,000 members would make this possible and gives us a clear, shared goal to work towards. Hitting that number would also make us the world’s largest sports club by membership! Updating the Wikipedia page is obviously not the goal, but we would not mind doing it along the way :)
